Internal Family Systems Therapy

Personhood can be complex.

Being an individual, full of conflicting ideas, may not always feel as manageable as we would like it to be. IFS recognizes this complexity and acknowledges that we may sometimes act in ways that don’t align with every part of ourselves. Using this idea, IFS can help you get to know and better understand the parts of yourself impacting your daily life. This approach to treatment allows you to work with your parts rather than against them so that you can encourage productive changes in your life.

In IFS, therapists use the concept of “parts” to explore different thoughts, feelings, sensations, and memories. Rooted in the belief that every part of the self has valuable qualities and intentions, IFS aims to foster harmony between parts so that you can improve your lived experiences.

Through guided visualization and dialogue, you can learn to identify, acknowledge, and communicate with these parts in a compassionate and nonjudgmental manner.

what is internal family systems therapy?

The ultimate goal of IFS is to help you develop a greater sense of self-awareness, self-compassion, and self-empowerment. By healing and working with wounded parts, you can reduce inner conflict, release emotional tension, and tap into the core “self”—the person at your center who is calm, confident, connected, creative, courageous, curious, and compassionate.
